„Mapping Luxembourg“ – Historische Karten und Pläne der Stadt Luxemburg online
Ein gemeinsames Projekt des Historischen Museums der Stadt Luxemburg und des Nationalarchivs Luxemburg
Auf Initiative des Historischen Museums der Stadt Luxemburg hin haben Museum und Nationalarchiv in einem gemeinsamen Projekt einen neuartigen Zugang zur Geschichte der Stadt Luxemburg geschaffen: die digitale Darstellung historischer Karten vor dem Hintergrund des heutigen urbanen Zustandes.
Das Historische Museum zeigt anhand vielfältiger Exponate sowie einer Serie von Stadtmodellen die Entwicklung der Stadt Luxemburg von ihren Ursprüngen im frühen Mittelalter bis heute. Historische Karten und Pläne sind in diesem Zusammenhang besonders dazu geeignet, die tiefgreifenden Veränderungen, die der Stadtraum über Jahrhunderte erfahren hat, zu verdeutlichen. Die umfangreichen kartografischen Bestände des Historischen Museums lassen sich jedoch über traditionelle Ausstellungsmedien nur unzureichend präsentieren. Mapping Luxembourg bietet hier einen neuartigen, digitalen Zugang. Ausgehend vom heutigen Stadtbild in der Darstellung von Google Maps kann sich der Besucher historisches Kartenmaterial erschließen, welches ihm erlaubt, sich spielerisch in Raum und Zeit zu orientieren.
Das Nationalarchiv hütet wahre Schätze, welche die Geschichte des Großherzogtums und seiner Hauptstadt dokumentieren. In der Absicht, dieses oft wenig bekannte historische Erbe einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen, hat das Archiv für Mapping Luxembourg zahlreiche Karten und Pläne zur Entwicklung der Stadt Luxemburg und ihrer Festung zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Veröffentlichung der Dokumente im Internet ergänzt dabei auf ideale Weise die aktuell von den Verantwortlichen des Nationalarchivs durchgeführte systematische Digitalisierung der Bestände.

A joint project of the Luxembourg City History Museum and the National Archives of Luxembourg
The Luxembourg City History Museum and the National Archives have, at the Museum’s initiative, created an innovative access to the history of the City of Luxembourg through a joint project: the digital presentation of historical maps against the background of the present-day urban morphology.
The History Museum uses numerous exhibits and a series of city modules to show the development of the City of Luxembourg from its origins in the early Middle Ages to the present. Historical maps and plans are in this respect particularly suited for showing the profound changes that have taken place in the urban space over centuries. Traditional exhibition media do however have their limits in presenting the History Museum’s extensive cartographic collections. Mapping Luxembourg allows an innovative, digital access thereto. Starting with the current cityscape presented by Google Maps, visitors can access historical map material enabling them to playfully explore space and time.
The National Archives are a real treasure trove of documentation on the history of the Grand Duchy and its capital. With the aim to make this often little known historical heritage accessible to a broader public, the Archives have made numerous maps and plans on the development of the City of Luxembourg and its fortress available for Mapping Luxembourg. The publication of documents on the Internet ideally supplements the systematic digitisation of the collections currently under way by the officials of the National Archives.

Un projet commun du Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg et des Archives nationales de Luxembourg
Les Archives nationales de Luxembourg et le Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg se sont, à l’initiative de ce dernier, alliés dans un projet commun visant à offrir un accès innovant à l’histoire de la ville de Luxembourg: la représentation numérique de cartes historiques mise en comparaison avec le paysage urbain actuel.
Au travers de nombreuses expositions et à l’aide de diverses représentations de la ville en maquette, le Musée d’Histoire a l’habitude de retracer l’évolution de la ville de Luxembourg, depuis ses origines, dans le haut Moyen Âge, jusqu’à nos jours. À cet égard, les cartes historiques et les plans sont particulièrement appropriés pour illustrer les profonds changements qui ont empreint le paysage urbain au fil des siècles. Mais les supports d’exposition traditionnels ne rendent pas justice à la richesse et à la diversité des fonds cartographiques du Musée d’Histoire. Pour remédier à cette situation, Mapping Luxembourg propose désormais un accès numérique innovant. À partir du paysage urbain actuel sur Google Maps, le visiteur peut afficher des cartes historiques et s’orienter ainsi de façon ludique dans l’espace… et dans le temps!
Les Archives nationales abritent de véritables trésors qui documentent sur l’histoire du Grand-Duché et de sa capitale. En vue de populariser l’accès de ce patrimoine historique souvent méconnu, les Archives ont fourni pour Mapping Luxembourg plusieurs cartes et plans représentant le développement de la ville de Luxembourg et de sa forteresse. La publication des documents sur Internet vient compléter la numérisation systématique des collections, menée actuellement par les responsables des Archives nationales.

Mapping Luxembourg is a virtual exhibition. Visitors can compare the historical plans of Luxembourg with the present-day city represented on Google Maps. Mapping Luxembourg is a cooperation project by and between the Luxembourg City History Museum and the National Archives of Luxembourg.
